Dr. Schaffer is doing his very best at healing, but still a long process. He is stable enough to have been moved back to Boulder from Thornton. The wound is taking it's sweet time still to heal, but he sure has loads of wonderful people round the clock watching over him and taking good care of him. Again, he misses all of our wonderful patients and is very much looking forward to returning to the office and start creating lots more SMILES BY JOEL !!!!!

As for the rest of us here at the "homestead" we sure do miss our Dr Joel. We are very fortunate to have Dr Dave with us now though. He is a wonderful and caring and very thorough Dentist and he is looking forward to meeting all our patients and new patients as well. Boulder dentist Dr. Joel Schaffer and his Associate Dr Dave Stangl offer the most advanced teeth whitening options to all his patients. If you are looking to brighten your smile, please ask us how we can help.

We use the Plasma Arc in-office whitening system because we feel it provides you with the best possible results. In many cases, we are able to lighten your teeth up to eight or nine shades.

Dr. Schaffer will isolate the gum tissue surrounding your teeth in order to reduce sensitivity. He will then apply a 37% hydrogen peroxide gel solution to your teeth. The Plasma Arc lighting system is completely self-activating, so there is no need for lasers or special lights.

Your procedure will take about an hour to complete, and you should notice the results immediately. It is important to avoid eating or drinking staining foods and beverages for 24 hours, since they may negate the effectiveness of your tooth whitening procedure.

This can lead to serious oral health and general health problems. Because Dr. Schaffer and Dr. Stangl wants you to visit them to keep your smile beautiful and healthy, his practice offers sedation dentistry if you are nervous about dental work.

Sedation Dentistry Options
The doctors offer both oral sedation dentistr y and nitrous oxide, which calms patients so they can relax. Oral sedation entails giving sedation dentistry patients an oral sedative one hour before they are to have their dental procedure. You are not completely asleep with sedation dentistry, but you are extremely relaxed. You may even nod out once in a while. However, you are aware enough to follow doctor’s instructions.

Nitrous oxide is the most common way Dr. Schaffer gets his patients to relax. It is widely known as laughing gas, and works by being administered through a mask placed over your mouth and nose. As with oral sedation, you will still be able to follow Dr. Schaffer’s instructions.

Improve Your Smile With a Smile Makeover

A smile makeover is a customized group of cosmetic dental procedures. Your smile makeover would be planned between you and Dr. Schaffer, after you have had a full dental examination. When a person has a dental problem, they do not always realize it. But a highly-trained cosmetic dentist can detect misalignment in the bite, can pinpoint teeth that are rubbing each other and causing premature wear, and can correct tiny cavities before they grow large.

Once your dental health has been improved and established, cosmetic procedures become more safe and appropriate. There would be little point in enhancing your smile - for example, with porcelain veneers - and then discovering that those teeth had decay entering them from the back surfaces.

One of the first smile makeover procedures is often teeth whitening. If you are going to be including replacement of old metal fillings in your smile makeover, those porcelain inlays and onlays can now be matched in color to your newly-whitened natural teeth.

Perhaps you need to replace one or more missing teeth. How to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Good dental health is the foundation of a beautiful smile. Poor dental health usually involves gum disease which can impair your general health. Gum disease has been linked to heart attacks and stroke and of course it causes pain, bleeding, tooth loss, gum recession and possibly bone loss. All of that is entirely avoidable.

The mouth always has bacteria and the goal of brushing and flossing is to keep their numbers down and prevent them from establishing themselves in nooks and crannies. Bacteria are single-celled organisms that feed on food particles left on the teeth and deposit excretions on the gums and teeth. They multiply and spread if they are not controlled.

Bacteria and their excretions are known as plaque. Plaque is acidic, which is why it wears holes in tooth enamel. Left on the teeth it will eventually harden and become tartar which cannot be brushed off. Our hygienists can remove tartar as well as discoloration, and their regularly-scheduled work will give you a fresh start each time in caring for your teeth.

Best Dental Hygiene Techniques

Use a soft toothbrush and brush for at least two minutes, at least twice a day, and preferably after each meal. Brush in a circular motion and an up-and-down motion rather than horizontally. Be sure and brush the backs of all your teeth.
Floss every night. Brushing does not clean the side surfaces of your teeth, and that is why flossing is the other half of daily dental hygiene. Use about 18 inches of floss and move it to a new patch for each between-teeth location. Use an up-and-down motion, curving the floss around the side surface of one tooth and then the side surface of the other. Try to avoid snapping the floss against your gums, as it can damage them.

If you would like to use a mouthwash, that is also beneficial although not essential.

If you brush and floss daily and come for regular check-ups and hygienist care, you can expect to enjoy good dental health for a lifetime.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin tooth covers custom-made for your individual teeth. The dental porcelain used looks and functions very much like tooth enamel. It absorbs some light and reflects some, like enamel, and has a similar pearly sheen. That means that your porcelain veneers will not be detectable as being veneers. They will just look like your natural teeth.

Dental Defects Corrected by Porcelain Veneers
Since a veneer is a tooth cover, affixed to the front surface of the tooth, it covers whatever defects are on the tooth. That may be:

Discoloration that will not respond to teeth whitening
Cracks and chips
Misalignment
Mismatched sizes
Crookedness
Gaps between teeth

You can have veneers done for all your front teeth that are visible when you smile, or you can have just one if there is a single problem tooth, or just the top two or four teeth. It is entirely up to you and Dr. Schaffer as to exactly how many veneers would best correct your smile.

To correct gaps, two veneers are designed, each a little wider than the tooth it covers. They meet nicely to give a more complete smile with no visible gap. To correct mismatched sizes, one veneer would have a slightly different size, so as to match the other tooth. To correct crookedness, a veneer would be made slightly thicker on the tooth’s receding side and thinner on its protruding side.

Veneers are known as indirect restorations, as they are not applied directly to your teeth like cosmetic bonding or the old amalgam fillings. They are first custom-made in a dental laboratory according to your dentist's specifications. Then they are bonded permanently to the teeth.

Porcelain neither stains nor whitens, so if your teeth need whitening, do that before you have your veneers. Then Dr. Schaffer can match them to your newly-brightened tooth color.

Porcelain veneers do not require any special care beyond your daily brushing and flossing and regular professional cleanings.
